Sport and Barcamp

Not both together, but that is what I spent yesterday doing.

First of all was the men’s final at Wimbledon (or rather the gentlemen’s singles final as it is correctly called). Enjoyed the game, especially after the first set and there was more of a battle. The US TV station look like htey love the sport – they can show ads every 2 games as the end changes.

then a quick dash into the city for the first organising meeting for Barcamp New York II. Chris has some photos. We gathered, chatted about venues and sponsorship and all that stuff, delegated out responsibilities and then scattered again to carry on organising remotely. The date is not yet finalised – venues need to be checked out first – but it will be either co-inciding with Earth barcamp at end of August or later in September.

After this it was off to find a bar playing the Wolrd Cup final..or rather, off to find a bar I could get into as many places were packed around times Square. The first half was watched in the ESPN store; there were a lot of families in there trying to give their kids a go on the various sports toys they have on the top floor (the other floors were all packed) They were getting very frustrated at having to work their way round the footie fans who just took all the space and made it difficult to get to anything. Such as the fishing game! Yep, there was a arcade fishing game with a rod and a reel and a father and son having a great time playing whilst completly ignoring the biggest sporting event in the world goign on right in front of them. For the second half I found another bar full of French and Italians, with English being the common language. Great atmosphere, with complete bewliderment all round as we tried to work out what was said to Zidane that caused him tp lose his head. So next up is Euro2008 in Austria. What are the bets for which round England fail at?

Long Tail Discussion

The Geek Dinner this evening with Chris Anderson. On a warm night, we took over the tables outside and monoplised the venue until after closing time.Chris’s talk was a short overview of his theory and then the floor was opened to questions. Both Ian and Kosso videoed the Q&A session, which is just audible over the buses. There were a lot of challenging question, but a deep dive into a net neutrality debate was cut off whilst the definition of net neutrality was still being discussed. For the rest of the evning, Chris was caught up in many conversations and continued to expand on the theme of the book.

Doctor Who tonight

I’ve been watching the trailers fopr Doctor Who all week, looking at the newspapers and been subject to the over the top coverage on the BBC morning show. The big finale is tonight..does Rose die or not? We know she’s going, but how. And I’m going to be on a plane! So I have to wait til that is over and then go find it and most likely wait til tomorrow to watch. I canlt wait to put into action my plan to buy and set up a Slingbox…wouldn;t help tonight but better going forward.

MySQL goes missing

I went to write a blog post this morning only to find that all I got was error messages about the connection to the databse being broken. And according to the Control Panel, I no longer had a database..it was missing. I was pretty sure I’d not done anything too stupid, so next step was the hosting company. Nothing on their website that I could see, it looked like all the servers were up so still no idea.

Now was a chance to test their support for the first time – simplewebhosting give you the opportunity to connect direct with a support person there and there, admittedly through a downloadable IM app that keeps their annomynity. But 30 seconds after clicking the link, here was the IM mesage back that they’d seen the problem and were rectifying it. ANd now it’s back.

They’ve always proved great at support and at following up any outages (about 2 in 2 years that I’ve been affected by) with aplogies and explanations. The instant support is a great tool – I don’t want to be waiting on the phone. Well woth a look if you are after somewhere.

Let’s make a viral!

Adrant’s has a post about a Coke press release announcing their latest viral. As a way of trying to get the video to be viral. And I continously hear the Account teams and creatives in the agency discussing what they are going to do for the viral element of a campaign.

So there is now an assumption that you need do nothing to get a viral other than call it a viral. Just churn something out, send it out to a few blogs and put it on a few video sites and away it goes. Now, having a good, targeted buzz campaign is always going to help something go viral, send out the seeds, so to speak. But it is not the only key to success.

The key – it has to be good. It has to give the viewer something. If i’m I’m going to waste 30 seconds or more watching or playing with something I have to get something back – a laugh, a sense of wow. Not just another ad that some agency has put on the web on You Tube that I would not stop the fast forward for on the TV.

The best virals are shared because they are good. And they can become self-sustaining after a while. How many people use the ‘Most viewed’ on YouTube to look for new things. Or use somethng like the Viral chart to see what is going on.

So instead of deciding how the next viral can be made and distributed, how about agencies focus more on making something remarkable first. Put into the strategy tools that make it easy to be viral if it takes off. If web based, give it a URL that can be linked to directly, don’t embed deep in a flash site. If video, let people take it away and put it on their sites, don’t lock down with DRM. Make it easy for people to send on, using send to a friend stuff…not everyone can work out how to copy and paste a link.

Just don’t assume that just because you call it viral that it will become one.

7/7/06

A year ago today, I sat in the office, the blinds all drawn following protocol to prevent glass damage if there were further bombs, trying to make sense of what was happening via the tv and the web.

But even though the experience is clear in my mind, it was second hand, through the media. So instead read the words below, via Rachel North , from 6 month remembrance ceremony. And at noon BST stop and think, about the victims of this attack and of sectarian and religious wars everywhere and what you can do to make a difference in your life to prevent cultural and religious differences being a destructive force instead of a constructive one.

We are here today in fellowship, to remember our fellow passengers from the morning of July 7th 2005. We think of them often, especially those who did not finish their journey. We think of all those who loved them and knew them. We think of the injured, the desolate and those who mourn. We think of the victims of the other London bomb attacks. We think of all those whose lives were changed by the events of 7th July. We think of the victims of all acts of terrorism’.

ALL: We hold them in our thoughts.

‘We think of those who helped us on that morning and afterwards, the staff of London Underground, especially the drivers of our train and the staff of Russell Square and Kings Cross. We think of the police officers, the fire officers, the ambulance drivers, the emergency services, the doctors and nurses and surgeons. We think of the kindness of passers-by and we think of all those who love London and who thought of the people of the city on that day and who held us in their thoughts.’

ALL: We hold them in our thoughts

‘We remember our fellow passengers from our train:James Adams, Samantha Badham, Phillip Beer, Anna Brandt, Ciaran Cassidy, Rachelle Chung For Yuen, Elizabeth Daplyn, Arthur Frederick, Karolina Gluck, Gamze Gunoral,Lee Harris, Ojara Ikeagwu, Emily Jenkins, Adrian Johnson, Helen Jones, Susan Levy, Shelley Mather, Michael Matsushita, James Mayes, Behnaz Mozakka, Mihaela Otto,Atique Sharifi, Ihab Slimane, Christian Small, Monika Suchocka, Mala Trivedi’

ALL: We hold them in our thoughts

ALL: When we all got on the train we did not know that for some of us it would be a last journey, and that some of us would not come home.
We did not all finish our journey together, but we carry you in our hearts. To all that loved you, knew you, worked with you, miss you, our thoughts are with you.
Wherever we travel, we know that we are all fellow passengers, and we are with each other on our journey.’

Silence for one minute

A short prayer from the gentle service of Compline, at the end of the day

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake.

ALL: Amen.

Lest we forget

A few more parodies

It must be the week for parodies…I’ve got a a few more just sitting and clustering up the tabs.

The first takes the piss out of the US MPAA warning about video piracy – before Lay’s (un)timely demise. Unfortunately the UK version does not have a similar backing tune so may not be as fun to parody, but I’m sure the ORG could step up to the mark.

And from Vallweywag, the Office Pirate audition for the new presenter at Rocketboom.

Cancelling the account

One possible measure of success is the parody. When Vincent Ferrari tried to cancel his AOL account, his recording of the reps attempts to keep him went quickly around the web. But Mark Day has now taken this and imagined himself trying to cancel a Playboy account and all the extra offers that could come with that subscription.

Although the particular AOL rep was apparently fired for treating the customer like this, I doubt he just decided to come in one day and decided to be awkward. He had to have been following the training and expectations of his bosses. I;ve tried cancelling a BT account and got the same kind of pressure to stay (although not as bad). It’s always cheaper to keep customers than to recriut new ones, but the attempt to keep should never be at the point of leaving. If the customer has got that far, it’s too late – the effort to keep should be done at all stages of the customer life cycle. Keep them happy, provide them the services they need with littlle trouble and they should never go near the cancellation hotline

belly dancing

belly dancing

A morocco restaurant means entertainment. A badly taken photo from the phone in the darkness of a Moroccan restaurant as the ‘traditional;’ belly dancer entertains the crowd. She managed to get half of the table up and dancing (there is a video if I can get it off the phone) whilst receiving plenty of admiring glances. This was the first time I’d been to a Moroccan place and was more than pleased with all the food – my favourite was the chicken and apricot tagine. If you are in west London, I’d recommend it for a great meal.

London 2012 a year on

The news comes through

Originally uploaded by RachelC.

A year ago a colleague and I wandered down to Trafalgar Square to watch the announcement about who would host the 2012 Olympics. The place was packed and had been filling up for hours. As the announcer stated London the place erupted with cheers and claps and then got filled with tickertape. London was up for a celebration and the papers the next day were filled with quotes and stories about how the Olympics would make a difference, how much everyone was looking forward to it. Forget the politics, the money issues, delays or any of the thigns that could go wrong, it was a week to look forward. The events that next day stopped that feeling in its tracks.

So this week we have the dichotomy in the news again, with Lord Coe on the news this morning promoting a day of celebration in Trafalgar Square; tomorrow will be a day of remembrance

Amanda Deboomed

Amanda Congdon has apparently left Rocketboom and from the sound of it is not too happy with the split. The main site just has archives and no current show. (Update – the Rocketboom site is currently showing a statement about Amadna wanting to move to LA to pursue other opportunities, a slightly different version to the one on her site. The truth – probably somewhere between the two?) An interesting decision – Amanda has a personal brand, ina way she is Rocketboom. If that programme continues and Amanda does her own thng, I’m guessing a lot of the audience will move with her and Rocketboom is going to lose a lot of brand equity.

Community Content

The rise in cameraphones/videos, desktop publishing and the ease of adding content to the social network sites such as myspace and bebo is driving the internet hall of fame. You can be forever famous for 15 people through your prose, spoken word or mimed dance video. And there seems to be an evergrowing appetite for content to while away the day and an increasing number of people who are looking for an outlet for the creativity that does not rely on the old media.

But sometimes, a real world famous person gets caught up in the amateur digital world. So here I bring you Alan Shearer, footballing hero, former England captain, miming along to U2 in the car. Apparently caught on film by his daughter and loaded up for the world to see.

Germany 0 Italy 2

Wow. Great game Good football between the 2 sides, a ref that ikept the game going and ignoring any play acting, just a demostration of footballing skills.

The airport lounge on Sunday had Saturday’s papers, all full of stories about how great the England team were and how they had a brilliant chance of going through. And we know how that ended up 🙁 But the BBC have a good article on what to do with all the unwanted England flags, to get the creative juices flowing.

3. If you’re a Sun reader you could consider using the flags as stuffing for an effigy of the newly-crowned “least popular man in the Premiership” Cristiano Ronaldo. Don’t burn it though as some polyester can give off pollutants.

Working my way through recorded telly prgrammes I skipped over loads of ads with a football theme; even if they had to reach then the companies were determined to get some mention in there. And now I’m watching the football with English commentary, which is far more preferable to my ears. But I’m finding it weird to be watching the match in the evening though, having grown accustomed to the day time matches that EST brings upon me.

Heatwave

I got back from New York to find Britain in the midst of a heatwave. Not that it is too much hotter than New York, and far less humid, but this is the UK – we really don’t do extremes. The weather reports have been giving out advice on how to cope with the wether, linking through to the NHSDirect site with advice on how to cope. Basically we should stay inside, don’t do a lot and drink lots of fluid. Sounds common sense, but yesterday lunchtime I walked into my local restaurant just as they were dealing with the aftermath of a lady with heatstroke.

But all things come to an end adn tomorrow we expect nasty thunderstorms and localised flooding, before the temps drop to more reasonable levels for the rest of the week.
